Close to my heart

Remembrance photography is something that I have always considered doing, but I didn’t think I would be able to deal with the emotions that came with it. That was until I became a mum myself, after having a traumatic birth where she was expected to be critical. Luckily she was just perfect but it got me thinking of those that are not as lucky as I am.

So many families lose babies before, during or just after birth. Some of these mums are carrying babies that they have been told have no chance of life. To some of them, it is a complete shock they are carrying perfect healthy babies and there is no reason for the tremendous loss they have to endure. Some parents get to love their children for months/years before they are cruelly taken from them. But every parent that loses a child deserves to have memories to remember them by. Years ago mums would be lucky to even have a cuddle with their angel baby let alone photos to remember them by.

Times have changed and hospitals are so amazing, they have cold cots that allow parents to spend days even weeks with their child. Taking in every little piece of them before they have to say goodbye. Knowing that so many people have to go through that pain made me realise I have to be able to give something that will bring them comfort in the years to come, no matter how hard it may be for me what those parents are going through is a million times worse. And my photos give them peace and memories to cherish for the rest of their lives, there really is no greater feeling than being able to do that for people.

Remember my Baby

I am a photographer for two very special charities, the first RMB Remember My Baby provides remembrance photography for babies that have passed away before, during or after birth. There are a group of photographers based all over the U.K that the charity contacts when they get a call out. This is such an important thing for the parents to be offered, those photos will be cherished for the rest of their lives.

Some parents may not like the idea at the time but they are always so thankful a while later when they have started to come to terms with their loss. It’s such an important part of the grieving process to have photos and memories with you for the rest of your life.

We are always looking for more hospitals to offer our services, they are completely free! So if you are a midwife reading this and the hospital you work for doesn’t offer it please get in touch. Or if you are a photographer reading this who thinks you may be able to do it please apply to be a photographer. As we get more heard of sadly our services are needed more often so we are always looking for more members to join the team.

Butterfly Wishes Network

The second charity is BWN Butterfly wishes network. This again is a group of photographers around the country that offer photo shoots to children with terminal or life limiting conditions. This again is so important to me, I thank my lucky stars daily that I have a healthy child so many people are not that lucky. If I can bring some joy into people’s lives and give them memories of happy times then my job is done.

I also do shoots off my own back for terminal children and those with life limiting illnesses, and I offer shoots to families where a parent has a terminal illness. I think it’s so important for the children to have those photos as they grow up. Knowing one day they will be showing their children the photos of their grandparents and telling them all about them is such an amazing feeling.

One little quote that made my year, from a family member of a very poorly little boy I photographed “your photos will continue to light up our family forever”. So please if you think anyone would benefit from any of these services don’t hesitate to let them know. Awareness is key the more people that are aware of it the more people we can help.

I appreciate this won’t of been an easy read for some of you, so if you are still here thank you for reading
